It is generally thought that a leper hospital founded in the 11th or 12th century existed in the locality but no trace of it remained by the 15th century. Some authorities believe that this barn which has an ecclesiastical appearance was built on the site of the hospital and it is marked as "chapel" on the OS map. Others believe that it is just a barn deliberately built by squire George Allen in 1803 to look like a chapel; and that the hospital was probably about a mile to the north-west on the site of the present Baydale Beck public house Image
