A very odd relic - not least because of the three 'chimney pots' on top, and because one of the columns has gone missing. It is plainly much older than the no-nonsense 19th-century house to which it now gives access. Since taking the photo I have found the relevant entry in the local volume of 'Pevsner' - in the Reculver section. It seems that when John Newman visited, both columns were still standing: 'GATEWAY at BROOK FARM. A very rustic Elizabethan affair. Four-centred archway, flanked by bottle-shaped columns. Pediment superimposed on a top-heavy entablature. Finials. [i.e. my 'chimneys']. Everything is carried out in moulded brick'. To which I would add that the brickwork is laid in English bond - which again suggests an early date.
