Hotel on Bootham. It was built in around 1827 and served as a private residence with various owners until 1875 when it was used as a girl's school called Bootham House for a few years. In 1882 it became the residence of the Principal Secretary to the War Department, after which it went through various roles for the government, eventually ending up as a Customs and Excise office before closing in 1984. The following year it opened as a hotel, with further development as such in 2006. Grade II* listed - see www.historicengland.org.uk/listing/the-list/list-entry/1259444. The gate and railings date from around 1840 and are separately grade II listed - see www.historicengland.org.uk/listing/the-list/list-entry/1259445.
