Around Honiley a late enclosure settlement was imposed on the ancient Arden landscape of small irregular fields and scraps of woodland in a tangle of winding lanes. Here there are rectangular fields and straight roads, where owners of expensive cars enjoy letting rip. Jets whine overhead on their approach to Birmingham airport. A characteristic row of hedgerow oaks comes into leaf, olive green near mustard yellow at this stage. Across the road, twentieth-century suburbia – a scatter of detached houses half-hidden by big garden evergreens.
