The hospital was originally built in 1924, and extended in 1942 by the Royal Navy to serve its land-based training centre at HMS Glendower Image and Image, later to become Butlin's Pwllheli, and now Hafan y Môr holiday camp. Among the more famous of the trainees at HMS Glendower was the present Duke of Edinburgh. http://www.northwestwales.org/WiSSCMS-en-303.aspx
