The ground in view is shown on OS mapping (1:25 000) as a tip, presumably from mining. The young trees conceal the tip and might be there simply for cosmetic purposes but it's likely, considering their density, that they've been planted as a crop. The tall pipes in view are just two of a good number extending out of view both to left and right; they may well be for some sort of venting of disused underground workings - the photographer has seen very similar pipes at old lead mine sites in the Pennines.
