Developed in two stages, big town villas were developed on the southern section of the road from the 1870s onwards on the grounds of the town's former workhouse. This part was developed from the late 1850s and has more middle class terrace housing. The road was also the birthplace in 1872 of former artist Aubrey Beardsley.
