Gawthorpe Hall was built between 1600 and 1605, the foundation stone was laid by Reverend Lawrence Shuttleworth on 26 August 1600, his family had lived at Gawthorpe for about 200 years. It is not clear who the architect was but is generally attributed to Robert Smythson. In the mid 19th century the house was sympathetically restored in an Elizabethan style by Sir Charles Barry and Augustus Pugin. The house and grounds were given to the National Trust in 1970 and it is open in conjunction with Lancashire County Council who lease the property.
