The earlier part of St. George's Hall was built in 1901 by the then owner of the adjacent George Hotel, which is still is business. The hall was used for large balls and other functions. During the Boer War and World War I it was used as a drill hall. In World War II it housed a needle manufactory. Subsequently it was sold off to a trust created by several local churches, who own the freehold. Its recent use has been as a community facility and today it is managed by SGH Venue Management, which is another charitable trust. The three storey extension, on the right of the building in this view, contains various facilities such as a refreshment area, lift & lettable spaces. The refurbished hall with its new extension (which replaced an earlier one) was opened in August 2013. This information was obtained from the hall's own excellent website, which contains much more information, including forthcoming events.
