This is the new(er) concert Steinway at St George's, Bristol. Should you wish to invest in one, today, set aside £175,000. (A lot of money but 2 months work, the finest materials and over 2,000 separate parts to complete.) Unlike, say, violinists, pianists have to rely on the quality of the instrument as they find it at any particular concert hall. A very few of the greatest pianists have travelled with their own instrument: Arturo Benedetti Michelangeli was one. Not only that, but with his own technician as well - so meticulous was he with the regulation of the instrument. This had disastrous consequences, on one occasion, for a recital at the Royal Festival Hall. The arrival of the piano in London coincided with a dock strike and, when it was eventually recovered from the ship, damp had affected the mechanism such that Michelangeli cancelled the recital.
