Cooper's Close

A Canongate close dominated by a hotel. Over much of central Edinburgh, residential and former industrial sites are being redeveloped as hotels and student accommodation and it has contributed to a very noticeable change in the atmosphere and feel of the city. Another, invisible change is that many flats are now in the hands of owners who use them for short term lets - i.e. invisible hotels. There is increasing bad feeling locally as I was to find out later in the afternoon. A more tangible change of atmosphere is that there was once a brewery nearby and the familiar smell of brewing in the city is much diluted now with only one biggish brewery left.
