The mediæval style Great Hall, described by Pevsner as a room of "great splendour and simplicity", has a hammerbeam roof painted with heraldic panels. Most are darkened, probably due to the effects of tobacco smoke, following over a century of use. A few (such as these) have been restored and give an impression of how majestic the roof would have looked originally.
