This grand entrance has a relatively modern history. The Arbroath and Forfar Railway was built running just behind this gate along an embankment in c. 1838. The railway company were forced to keep the castle owner happy and built this grand entrance gate and tunnel under the line just behind. The railway embankment is still there.
