Part of the old Cheshire Lines Committee network, this line connecting Chester with Northwich and Manchester is nowadays known as the mid-Cheshire line. The station was called Hartford & Greenbank until 1973, but the name was shortened in accordance with the policy of the time (Greenbank was used in preference to Hartford to distinguish it from Hartford station on the West Coast Main Line).
