On the 22nd of October 1942 a German Dornier bomber dropped its bombs on Market Hill, Orford killing 13. Their names are listed below. Harriett Sharman ASHLEY age 29, Neville Frank CHAMBERS age 4, Pauline Cecily CHAMBERS age 11, Robin Arthur CHAMBERS age 8, John Alfred Victor GOODING age 15 months, Louisa Ethel GOODING age 23, Alice Maud HAWES age 49, Jack HAWES age 14, Kate Mary SMITH age 25, Brian Alban SMITH age 5 and Dorothy Kathleen SMY age 32. Douglas Charles SMY, Royal Navy, age 20 and Andrew Walter KNIGHTS, Royal Air Force, age 23 were both home on leave and were also killed. There are also some military casualties buried in the churchyard.
