Founded by Richard de Luci in 1178, some say in penance for his involvement with the murder of Thomas Becket - Archbishop of Canterbury. The abbey thrived throughout the middle ages until the dissolution of monasteries by Henry VIII in 1539. The ruins are passed by the Green Chain Walk, and form part of the public park that is now the Lesnes Abbey Woods.
