Originally built as a private chapel by Thomas Clifford at Tixall in 1829. The family moved to Burton Constable in 1835 and when the estate was sold in 1845.The chapel was removed stone by stone by the congregation to a site in Great Haywood. In May 1916 JRR Tolkien and his wife Edith received a Nuptial Blessing of their Lent wedding. Edith like many another officer's wife had moved to Great Haywood to be near her husband whilst training at Brocton Camp on Cannock Chase.
