A town's market cross was the traditional place from which important news was proclaimed and it is from this one that the Mid-Lent fair is still proclaimed open each year by the Lord Mayor. King Richard III authorised the holding of this fair in Grantham in 1483. The Grade II-listed cross dates from around 1300 and has been demolished twice - in 1779 and 1884 - but on each occasion it was restored as a result of public pressure.
