Although Carlton Colville has expanded rapidly with many new estates and is now just a suburb of Lowestoft, St Peter' Church is away on the western edge with fields beyond. Another new estate has appeared to the north-west in the ground of Carlton Hall so one wonders for how much longer it will be possible to see fields from the churchyard. The west tower has an Early English ground floor and a Decorated top. The nave has one renewed Norman window but the nave and chancel have been over-restored.
