The Shropshire Union Canal is about 66 miles long and links the Manchester Ship Canal (and therefore the River Mersey) with the canal systems of the West Midlands. It is seen here towards its northern end as it passes the city walls of the ancient city of Chester. A spur a little to the west of this point also links the canal to the River Dee. As can be seen, the canal is at a considerably lower elevation to the houses along the wall. The photograph was taken from Image] which carries Northgate Street over the canal.
