This benchmark in the west face of the tower, north side of the doorway, was established in the mid nineteenth century during the First primary levelling of England & Wales, and was levelled with a height of 181.2520 feet [55.2456 metres] above mean sea level (Liverpool datum). It was included as a side level on the Worcester to Aberystwyth levelling line. The surveyor's description was "No. 88(b). St. Mary's Church, Tenbury. Bolt in front of tower ; 0.69 ft. above surface" (Public Abstract p.552).
