A strange state of affairs exists in Aberystwyth as the Catholic congregation of 300 now has no church and services are held in a school. The Church of Our Lady of the Angels and St. Winefride was built in 1874 and was the first Catholic church to be built in Mid Wales since the Dissolution of the Monasteries. It closed in 2012 on the grounds that the church and presbytery were unsafe and the cost of refurbishment would be prohibitive. An application was presented to the planners to clear the site but that was subsequently withdrawn. Current thoughts appear to be that the buildings will be converted into apartments. Meanwhile the church is deserted and surrounded by barriers.
