The mid-19th century saw the growth of the modern army and with it the need to build permanent camps and training areas. The heathland on the Surrey/Hampshire border proved ideal for these purposes and, with landowners more than willing to part with these barren wastes, the government acquired 25,000 acres around the small market town of Aldershot. Most of the area remains in MOD ownershop today, although parts are open to the public if training is not taking place. This is the bridleway from Stoney Castle to Pirbright Lodge which runs along the edge of the training area. Photo taken near Vines Farm.
