The gallery is closed for major building work which will provide a new education wing over four floors, exhibition space and a café, incorporating the terrace fronting Castle Street which had been derelict for 13 years since fire destroyed the former post office and Chinese restaurant in 2003. Seen from St Giles' churchyard, the original house of curator and art collector Jim Ede can be glimpsed at the right and the recently reopened Museum of Cambridge on the left.
