The Great Northern Railway opened its line between Maiden Lane and Peterborough through what is now Hadley Wood in 1850. The station was opened on 1st May 1885 by the Great Northern Railway. There are tunnels in both directions, close to the station. Hadley Wood North Tunnels are just over 200 yards long, whereas Hadley Wood South Tunnels are nearer 400 yards. A photograph of the North Tunnels with their dates can be seen at http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/4939973 The station has four platforms, but only the outer platforms are in everyday use by stopping trains, with high speed services using the central tracks. The inner platforms have recently been re-surfaced however, and can be used during emergencies.
