This public house is said to have 13th century origins although the present basically U-plan structure is largely 17th century. The front was brought forward in the 18th century and various modern additions have been made. It is a grade II listed building (Cadw Building ID: 7381 http://www.britishlistedbuildings.co.uk/wa-7381-the-old-black-lion-ph-lion-street-hay#.VyZW0__mqHs British Listed Buildings).
