The porticoed building is the former town hall, built in 1861-62 to the design of John Denison Jee. The adjacent buildings look a little earlier - late Georgian perhaps. Grade II listed. At the time, part of the old town hall looks as if it was being used as a tourist information centre - finding a new use for such buildings in small towns can be difficult.
