The nature of the two roads could hardly be more different. Although quite broad at this location, Coach Road, at the left side of the image is a very quiet and in places narrow route connecting the small Gateshead village of Lady Park with Lobley Hill. To the right and less well seen is the A1, a major north/south route this stretch of which - Coal House to Metro Centre - is being widened, from two to three lanes.
