'Kelmarsh School instituted by the Right Hon Lord Bateman 1850' - this rather bland statement hides a tale of the past. In 1849, Lord Bateman, weary of the behaviour of his tenants, had given them all notice to quit. He called them all to the Hall, where he told them that he would withdraw the notices if they improved their behaviour towards one another and adopted more temperate habits. Further, he said, if they did so he would provide the village with a school and an institute. Here today is the evidence that he stood by his word.
