The Victoria County History https://www.british-history.ac.uk/vch/rutland/vol2/pp170-175 suggests that this was an admonition to mourners passing in funeral processions. The right hand side has clearly been trimmed at some stage. The style of lettering and the language suggest a late 17th/early 18th century date.
