Originally Douglas Street ran between Nelson Street and Queen Street. Where the new houses now are was previously the site of the James North factory. When the estate of new houses was built on the site, the middle section of Queen Street was erased and the remainder renamed Douglas Street even though the bottom end off Nelson Street has been cut off by bollards to prevent the estate being used as "rat-run".
