112-114, Western Road, Brighton

Number 112 on the left was a residence until converted into a shop in the 1860s its first occupant being an estate agent. A fairly rapid turnover of businesses followed until 1918 when K West, a furrier, moved in and stayed until 1960. The shop then became a health food retailer and a bridal gown shop before returning as an estate agents in 1989 albeit under four different owners. Number 114 on the corner of Little Western Street has been a public house since at least the 1840s originally called the City of York before a brief period as the Polar Bar and since 2005 the Duke of Norfolk. It is one of two on Western Road, see also Image The pub extended into 113 during the 1960s the previous shop also seeing a fairly large turnover of occupants the longest tenure being a series of fruiterers and greengrocers during the 19th century and milliners during the 20th century. Number 114 is the most westerly building on the southern Brighton side of Western Road.
