The four storey building was once one of two banks that occupied the southern corners of Western Road and Norfolk Square, see also Image During the 1850s it was a bookseller then a tailor before converting to a bank in 1873, initially as the Hampshire which was renamed Capital & Counties after a merger in 1877. The bank moved to new purpose built premises on the north west corner of Western Road and Norfolk Square, see Image, in 1895. Subsequently, the building became a branch of Clark’s the bakers whose main bakery was located near Hove station until 1976. After that I have a single reference to it being a bookmakers in 1985 until around 2009 when Massey the estate agent moved from neighbouring Image They left around 2010 and the property was empty for a couple of years until another estate agent, Cubitt & West moved from Image around 2013. 1854-1862 - BOOKSELLER, STATIONER, LIBRARIAN (C Brook) 1864 - TAILOR (Alfred Simpson) 1873-1895 - BANK (Hampshire 1873-77, Capital & Counties 1879-95) 1898-1976 - BAKERS (Clark’s Bread Ltd) 1985 - BOOKMAKERS (William Hill) 2009-2016 - ESTATE AGENTS (Massey 2009-10, Cubitt & West 2013-16)
