Burnett's church, basking in the warm Spring sunshine. This ancient little place of worship goes back many centuries. Behind it is the tall Manor House; one of its occupants was a Tudor merchant by the name of John Whitson. After his passing, he bequeathed the parish of Burnett in trust to found a school for the orphaned daughters of Bristol’s aldermen and merchants. The school, founded in Bristol, ordained that the girl pupils should wear red, and is still known to this day as Red Maids.
