The information board by the gate explains that in the middle ages the hollow pathway was a lane from Foxton to Fowlmere. Either side of it are low earthworks which mark the sites of mediaeval houses. The shadow on the left is of the 18th-century dovecot (so spelled in Foxton) photographed by Keith Edkins: Image
