James Ramsden, whose statue can just be seen at the end of the road, devised Abbey Road as a grand ceremonial entrance to his showcase New Liverpool. Latterly it fell on hard times, especially the last stretch running into the town centre, but it is now being slowly renovated. Until a couple of years ago it was the main A590 trunk road in and out of town, notorious for its seemingly endless sequence of traffic lights. It has now been bypassed and Abbey Road is now an unclassified road, though still extremely busy and subject to unending roadworks.
