Keaki, its popular name, was first introduced from Japan in 1862. It is a member of the Ulmaceae, the Elm family. In the aftermath of Dutch Elm Disease in Britain in the 1970s it was planted as a disease-resistant replacement for lost English Elm despite having a different form and habit.
