This bench mark was established in 1849 during the First primary levelling of England & Wales, and was levelled with a height of 118.7680 feet [36.2005 metres] above mean sea level (Liverpool datum). It was included on the Worcester to Aberystwyth levelling line. The surveyor's description was "No. 9. Mark on 4th milestone from Worcester and 8th from Stourport ; 1.44 ft. above surface" (Public Abstract p.550). Since that time the milestone (which no longer bears any inscription) has been moved during road widening. A more modern milestone has been erected a few metres to the south.
