The church is in Dixon Street, and is dedicated to St Martin of Tours. It was built in 1939 on the site of an old mine. The architect was Richard Twentyman. The statue mounted on the wall overlooking the entrance is by the sculptor Don Potter, who also designed the font and pulpit. Worship is within the Anglo-Catholic tradition of the Church of England, under the pastoral and sacramental care of the Bishop of Ebbsfleet. The church is paired with St Stephen's in Hilton Street.
