In the 1930s Liverpool Council had been forced to develop large housing estates beyond the city boundary. Three areas of land had been bought before 1939, but the start of the Second World War in the same year meant that new building developments were halted but when war ended the building could start again quickly as land was already available. One such estate built was at Speke, to the south-east of Liverpool, which building work had started in 1936. By 1957 the estate was almost complete with a total of more than 6000 dwellings. The airport perimeter fence is visible to the left of the picture.
