The building began life as a private residence whose archeticture was influenced by Spanish buildings. It later became refreshment rooms initially known as The Chimes and later as the Spanish Lady Tearooms. It was converted into a public house in 1956, the first and until the late 1980s the only one in Saltdean, retaining the name of the previous business.
