Nineteenth century benchmark at Adelaide Lodge

This bench mark was established in 1849 during the First primary levelling of England & Wales, and was levelled with a height of 171.1200 feet [52.1574 metres] above mean sea level (Liverpool datum). It was included as a side level on the Worcester to Aberystwyth levelling line. The surveyor's description was "No. 14(b). Mark on gate pier at entrance to Adelaide Lodge, North side of road ; 1.39 ft. above surface" (Public Abstract p.550). Only the lower half of the mark survives; the upper brick having been replaced.
