The mansion was built in between 1731 and 1743 by Joseph Thompson. It was purchased by Samuel Farmer in 1799 and rebuilt in a Tudor Gothic style from 1802 to 1806. In 1937 the Farmer family sold the mansion to a group of local authorities. The design bears a resemblance to the original Nonsuch Palace, constructed for Henry VIII in the 16th Century.
