Martin Anderson was born in 1854 at nearby Leuchars and went on to make his name and fortune as an artist and postcard printer and designer at Tayport just down the road. From the profits he and his sister built a fine house at the top end of this tree lined drive in Balmullo. The locals thought it was so fine they called it Castle Cynicus after his pen name. He died in poverty in 1932 and his house was demolished in 1939. Today little remains but this drive and a modern place name in the village.
