A new development built on the site of the Connaught Institute opened in 1879 as a soldiers' home. It later became a mechanics' institute, a reading room, temperance bar, mission hall and was last used as part of Covers building yard. The latter closed around 2007 with part occupied by Viaduct Lofts, the flats on the right, located on the site of the former Lewes Road Viaduct. The old institute was demolished around 2010 and is being replaced by a small mews.
