Baker Street, Brighton

A shopping street which links London Road to Ditchling Road that was developed in the late 1840s with the retail part gradually building up as the street became the preferred pedestrian access from those visiting London Road from the east. It still retains a number of small independently owned shops including a couple of venerable Brighton institutions on the right. Bardsleys fish and chip shop opened here in 1926 and is now being run by the third generation of the same family. Next door is A Coombs pet shop which opened in 1934 and is currently owned and run by Robert Harper who began as a Saturday boy and worked his way up to manager and eventually purchased the business from the Coombs family. One of the former shops which traded here for over 40 years was A Cooper, a hairdresser who would charge a £1 for a haircut as long as it was short back and sides. You could ask for other styles but you would still end up with short, back and sides. An institution that was often visited by the out of pocket and those with a sense of adventure.
