The 5th November 2007 will mark the fiftieth anniversary of the day when sugar was first poured into the silo. The sugar producers Tate & Lyle commissioned the Cementation Company to build a new, state-of-the-art silo. Construction of the structure commenced in early 1955 and took about two and a half years to complete. The silo was built of reinforced concrete with a pre-stressed concrete floor, and comprised 12 sections each supported by six external ribs. Sugar was carried into the silo via an overhead conveyor track from the dockside. The building is Grade II listed. The road in the foreground is the A5036 Regent Road.
