The West Street church, designed by Edward Welby Pugin in the High Victorian Gothic style, was erected in 1859-1860. The building was Grade II listed in 1993. This church was where JRR Tolkien married Edith Bratt in March 1916. In a letter written many years later, Tolkien expressed his admiration for his wife's willingness to marry a man with no job, little money, and no prospects except the likelihood of being killed in the Great War.
