Looking west, towards Padgate and Liverpool, from the bridge carrying Burtonwood Road across the railway. This is the former Cheshire Lines Committee main line between Liverpool and Manchester, and for several years was the more important route between the two cities, used by all long distance trains serving both. However, the original route (via Newton-le-Willows) has been electrified and now hosts an hourly Liverpool to Newcastle express service.
