The Southampton & Dorchester Railway opened its main line through Wareham in 1847. The line to Swanage was opened on 20th May 1885 and was operated from the start by the London & South Western Railway. The passenger service was withdrawn after 3rd January 1972. In May 1972, the Swanage Railway Society was formed. In 1979 a short line re-opened at Swanage and this was extended, first to Herston Halt and then to Harman's Cross in 1988. Neither of these had been stations previously. In 1995 the railway reopened from Swanage to Corfe Castle, and onwards to Norden. Likewise Norden had never had a station in the days of British Railways. This view of the terminus at Swanage looks up the line towards Herston Halt. The man in the foreground is operating the water to fill the engine before its return to Norden.
